Most of what people know about hypnosis they learn from stage performers. We watch as some poor fool gets up on stage and barks like a dog while walking like a chicken. Or an evil hypnotist on a screen takes over a person's mind and makes them do things against their will. Yes, it is amusing but that is not what hypnosis is about.
Trance is a natural, yet altered, state of mind. Most people enter trace several times during the day … when we become lost in thought (daydreaming), experience a void in time while driving (road trance). While we sleep out mind relaxes and enters trance. It is a time for our mind to rejuvenate as well as for us to accomplish goals.
Hypnosis relaxes the critical factor, the part of our mind the separates the conscious from the sub-conscious. The critical factor works to keep us from being in a continuous dream-like state, it filters through information that is necessary and keeps communication between the two in check.
When we enter trance we are in the protective state of our sub-conscious mind. One of it's key tasks is to look out for our well-being … that is why when the road entrances us we are still able to get to our destination safely, it is our 'auto-pilot'. Our sub-conscious also protects us from doing anything against our morals and personal ethics while in trance. No one can force a person to do anything that is against their will or that will do harm while they are in hypnosis. The people who get on stage and do silly things do them because they want to, not simply because it was suggested. They want to relax, let go, and allow their silly-side a chance to come out to play.
There is no negative to hypnosis, only positive. With hypnosis chronic pain can be managed, people can stop smoking, loss weight, rid themselves of past traumas, become more successful … the benefits are endless.
Anyone with a medical condition MUST see a medical specialist before seeking hypnosis. Hypnosis is a wonderful tool to add to medical treatment; it is NOT a replacement for it. Hypnosis can make medical treatments easier to bear, reduce stress that can hinder healing, assist in controlling pain, and keep the outlook of the patient a positive one!
